Pete Backwell

Pete qualified as a Chartered Accountant at Deloitte and was a partner in the Tax Division before joining the Nedcor Group in 1991. On moving to the banking side of the business, Pete later headed up Nedbank's Corporate Banking Division before being appointed Managing Director of Retail and Wealth Management. In this role, Pete was responsible for the Nedbank, Old Mutual Bank, Pick 'n Pay Go Banking, the Wealth Management businesses and the insurance/assurance-related businesses. Pete joined Halls in 2004 as Executive Chairman, but stepped down from this role in 2006 to focus on developing the company's investments in the financial services and pharmaceutical industries. He was appointed MD of the HL Hall & Sons Group in 2014.

Duncan Harrison

Duncan trained in Biochemistry at Wits University graduating with an MSc degree in the 1980s. After then qualifying as a Chartered Accountant at Deloitte & Touche, he was appointed as a partner in their Enterprise Risk Services Division specialising in the IT systems of financial institutions. Duncan was head hunted as Chief Operating Officer and Financial Director of an established software house, before joining Maple Associates in 2000 as a strategy and governance consultant.

Duncan joined the Holdings Board in October 2004.

Outside of work Duncan enjoys nature, history, reading and cycling.

David Mabunda

Dr Mabunda was the Chief Executive Officer of South African National Parks, and former Director of the Kruger National Park. He holds a PhD in Ecotourism Management from Pretoria University. Prior to joining SANParks, David lectured at colleges and universities locally and abroad and has published extensively in environmental education and educational psychology. In 2004 he joined the Department of Land Affairs as a Director and played a leading role in the land reform and restitution process in Mpumalanga. Dr Mabunda has experience in strategic planning, management and leadership with good understanding of Human Resources Capital Management. Dr Mabunda has recently been appointed as Chair of the Interim Council of the University of Mpumalanga.

Dr. Mabunda was born on Mattafin and joined the Board in August 2006.

David believes a healthy body makes for a healthy mind. Despite his busy schedule, David ensures he regularly works out in the gym.

Ntokozo Majola

With a Masters in Development Economics from Williams College in Massachusetts, Ntokozo is the Provincial Manager for the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) in Mpumulanga and a former Chief Director in the province's Department of Economic Development and Planning. Ntokozo has extensive experience in Strategy Development and Management, Operations Management, SMME Development and Foreign Trade Facilitation.  She is skilled in facilitating compliance to meet the new BEE scorecard through Corporate Social Investment, Enterprise Development, Preferential Procurement and Supplier Development Programmes.

Ntokozo is very involved in her church’s activities. Her faith and Christian values have played a very big part in shaping her life and believes that there is only one way to lead – by example.

Peter Prentice

Chairman

Peter qualified as a chartered accountant at Ernst and Young in 1976. In 1978 he took up the position of Financial Manager at WJ Spracklen (Pty) Ltd, and was promoted a year later to General Manager. In 1981 he became an audit partner at Cameron & Prentice, which merged with BDO South Africa Inc. From 2015 provides independent management consulting services BDO and certain of its clients, but is also busy planning a totally new career as an alternative to retirement.

Peter joined the Halls Board in June 1989 and became Non-Executive Chairman in August 2006.

Rob Snaddon

Rob obtained a BSc Engineering degree at Wits University in 1973. He continued his post-graduate studies at the University of Bristol and earned his PhD in 1979. After a short stint as a Post Doctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, England, Rob spent the early years of his career with General Electric Corporate R&D (GE) in New York and was involved in research and development. Rob moved with GE to Pennsylvania in 1986 to take up the position of Manager, International Marketing at GE Environmental Services Inc. He has written and published (as author and co-author) over twenty scientific papers.

In 1988 Rob returned to South Africa and joined HL Hall and Sons, initially as Managing Director Designate for six months, after which he was promoted to Managing Director, a position he held until his retirement in 2014.

Rob loves flying, cycling, swimming, fishing, spending time in the bush and playing music (drums) with friends and family.

Jono Swart

Jono completed his articles with Ernst & Young in 1990. He joined the Central Timber Co-operative in 1991 as the accountant, where he worked his way up the ranks to take over as General Manager. In 2009 Jono joined TWK Agriculture as Timber Business Development Executive. In May 2010 he invested in his own business and currently is the executive director of the Halorite Group of companies, focused on providing water saving solutions and the provision of energy saving products and services.

After the completion of his MBA Jono did part time lecturing of MBA students in financial management.

Besides his passion for outdoor activities, Jono is quite a linguist: he speaks English, Afrikaans, German, Zulu and even a little Japanese.

Tracey Davies

Halls (Fresh Produce)

Tracey Davies started her career in the technical arena after receiving a BSc Degree and Chemistry Honours from the University of Natal. She progressed into a Technical Sales role and later Marketing and Business Management. During this time she completed the Unilever Graduate recruitment programme and obtained a certificate in Industrial Marketing through UNISA.  During her 19-year working career, Tracey has had the opportunity of working at four major South African companies, namely National Starch, Robertsons, Unilever SA and AECI.

During her 11 years at AECI, Tracey has run businesses in the surfactants, chemicals and food ingredients industries.  From 2012 Tracey led the LakeFoods business as Managing Director before joining Deltamune in 2016, where she led the business through a transformation process to reinvent the value proposition and cement a strong leadership team.

In May 2018 Tracey joined the Halls Fresh Produce business as CEO.

Tracey is married and has a daughter.  Her family’s most precious times are spent in the great outdoors.

Richard Franklin

Halls Investments

Richard completed his BSc (Hons) Computer Science in 1997, and started his working career at the Sasol Synfuels facility in Secunda, focusing on plant optimisation and management information systems. Richard completed his MBA part-time through the University of Pretoria in 2002. The following year Richard joined McKinsey & Co as an associate and was exposed to the broader business environment while based in South Africa, Nigeria, India, Singapore and Australia.

Richard joined Halls Investments in September 2008, as is currently responsible for the Pharmaceutical portfolio, as well as supporting due diligence of new investment opportunities.

Alan Hutcheson

Lightstone

Alan started his career at WesBank where he occupied various executive positions in the Corporate Asset Finance and Fleet Divisions. He completed a BComm Finance and an MBA through Henley Management College in London. After a career in WesBank of some 25 years, he took up a post as CEO of Tracker which he occupied for eight years. Alan joined Lightstone in 2015 and is currently the CEO of Lightstone Group.

Alan’s interests are cycling, golf and photography. He is married with one daughter.

Dr. Mabunda was born on Mattafin and joined the HL Hall & Sons Holdings Board in August 2006. At the beginning of 2018, David took over the position of Managing Director of Halls Properties.

John Williams

HL Hall & Sons Group Finance

John qualified as a Chartered Accountant at KPMG, where he worked in a variety of roles in both South Africa and England, before joining Lightstone in January 2011 where he was appointed Group Chief Financial Officer. In 2016, John took up a position in the HL Hall & Sons Group to drive strategy and governance. John’s portfolio has since expanded and he now oversees the financial function of the Group.

John has a passion for education, and has played an active role in the Thandulwazi Trust, a charitable organisation focused on Maths and Science education for the previously disadvantaged. John’s other passions centre around sport, including long distance running and golf. John is married with twins, who keep him young at heart.

Nic Hughes

Nic Hughes

Halls Financial Services

Nic started his working career at Hollard in 2002, after completing both a BSc in Physiology and Archaeology and a PGDIP in Marketing at UCT. Nic spent 12 years at Hollard where he was actively involved in Hollard’s expansion into India, Pakistan and East and West Africa. In his later years at Hollard, Nic was responsible for a number of Hollard’s major JV relationships.

Nic joined Lightstone in March 2014 and then moved into Halls Financial Services in September 2016.

Nic is married with two daughters which keep him on his toes. Nic enjoys all forms of sport and is most relaxed when in the bush.
